New Work That Respects an Older Home
A hardscape project on an older home shouldn’t look disconnected from everything around it. Stone foundations, porch steps, brick, slate, mature trees and long-established gardens set a visual language that new work has to respect. Our patios, walkways, retaining walls, fire pits and driveways use materials and proportions that work with the house instead of competing with it.
Front Walkways and Patios That Suit the House
The front walkway has a bigger visual impact than its size suggests. It crosses the most visible part of the landscape, and cracked or badly placed concrete makes a lovely house feel unfinished. A brick, stone or paver walk can work with the existing porch steps, foundations, beds and trees.
Out back, a patio should relate to the home the way a porch or terrace does. Color, scale, edge details and how it meets the doors all matter. On smaller yards, a compact patio may be plenty, while larger ones can take a fire pit. Projects can also be planned now and built in stages.
Working Around Porches, Slate Roofs and Stonework
Older homes have details that deserve extra care. Porch steps may not follow modern dimensions, old stone walls may be worth saving, and mature branches may hang over expensive slate roofs. Before building or removing a tree, we look at those conditions instead of treating the property like a blank site.
Tree trimming can remove dead wood and clear the roof and porch while keeping the shade you want. When a tree is badly declining or unstable, removal is controlled section by section, since there’s often little open space below. Planting beds and landscape lighting help the new work settle in.
